Using a machine to shred/blow straw has several advantages over hand spreading:

Major savings in time and therefore money
Increased absorbency of straw (Jeantil machines break up the fibrous outer surface of the straw stalk thus increasing the amount of moisture that can be absorbed)
Produces a less compacted and thus more comfortable bed of straw (the blowing action separates the individual stalks and lets them float down into the stall)
